Living Coasts – Torquay’s Coastal Zoo

Living Coast – Torquay’s coastal zoo and conservation charity

Take a journey around the coasts of the world where amazing plants and animals live life on the edge. At Living Coasts, you’ll see birds and mammals in specially-designed naturalistic habitats. With outdoor and indoor exhibits, there’s plenty to see and do whatever the weather.

Penguin Beach

Penguin Beach has been designed to look very like coastal habitats near Cape Town in South Africa where African penguins live in large colonies. At Living Coasts, you can get an insight into how these amazing animals live in the natural world. The penguins are all free roaming and often explore the visitor boardwalks using their very own “penguin crossing”. Juvenille Macaroni penguins and some sea ducks also live on Penguin Beach as well as a variety of unusual plants.

South American fur seal

Living Coasts South American fur seals live in a specially designed cove where they can bask on a rock or dive and swim, exploring their underwater world and playing with some of the toys created to keep them active and to make their environment as natural as possible. Living Coasts currently has 5 fur seals: Grace, a mature female; Oscar, the seal pup; and Tunanta, a young female seal who likes to swim and swim, Gringo, the laregest male and Luna another female seal, both arrived from Hamburg earlier this year and have settled very quickly.

Visiting Living Coasts. Living Coasts is open every day (except Christmas Day) from 10am. With exhibits outdoors and indoors, there’s plenty to do whatever the weather! Last entry is at 4:00pm with the whole site closing at 5pm
