The kindest thing one can say about Transformers 3 is it’s not as bad as the second installment. That’s damning with faint praise however, given the second film was an execrable, obnoxious piece of trash, and a massive step down from the more acceptable first. It’s simply a case of numbers: the first took more than [...]
Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna enjoyed an adrenaline-fuelled, extraordinary career before his tragic death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. So it’s fitting that the man often regarded as the greatest racer who ever lived gets a documentary to match. Senna, directed by Asif Kapadia, is unquestionably one of the finest films of 2011 but that’s mere hyperbole, [...]

Like all great documentaries, Rio Breaks transcends its subject matter to talk about a great many things. Ostensibly, it’s centered around two young boys from the Rio de Janeiro favela who may ultimately find a way of escaping their dangerous, troubled lives through surfing. Of course, Justin Mitchell’s film eventually fans out to encompass wider [...]
The somewhat spotty X-Men franchise has had its ups and downs over the years, but with X-Men: First Class, director Matthew Vaughn has taken the comic back to its origins and brought it back up to the level of Bryan Singer’s X2 from 2003. Much like Singer’s film (oft considered to be the best in [...]

There’s some truly striking imagery in Red Riding Hood. It’s just a shame they had to structure such a trite, banal story around it. The opening aerial shot swooping down over the forests of a mystical, far-away land (actually British Columbia in Canada) promises a rich Gothic tapestry that will do justice to the Freudian [...]
For a film set in Roman Britain and filled to the brim with more swords, sandals, soldiers, tribes and betrayals than one can shake a toga at, The Eagle is staggeringly boring. What’s even more shocking is that director Kevin McDonald, responsible for such edgy, gripping fare as Touching the Void and The Last King of [...]
